Happy Butter Ghee

About Happy Butter Ghee
Happy Butter Ghee, based in Buckfastleigh, Devon, is a family-run business founded by Kate and Rupert, whose journey began as a quest to improve Kate’s thyroid health.
The couple’s personal experience with ghee’s health benefits and its culinary versatility inspired them to create their own ghee using traditional methods and organic butter sourced locally.
About Happy Butter Ghee
The idea for Happy Butter Ghee emerged when Rupert began researching dietary solutions for Kate’s thyroid condition, Hashimoto’s Disease. Concerned about the impact of conventional cooking oils on health, they turned to ghee—a pure, stable fat made from butter.
Ghee is:
Non-inflammatory: Free of lactose, casein, and sugars, making it gentle on the gut.
Nutrient-Rich: Contains vitamins A, D, and K, along with conjugated linoleic acids (CLAs).
Ideal for High-Heat Cooking: Stable at high temperatures without breaking down into harmful compounds.
Through trial and error, the couple discovered that slow cooking and caramelizing the milk solids produced the best flavor and texture. The result was a rich, golden ghee with a nutty, aromatic flavor.
Mission and Values
Kate and Rupert prioritize organic ingredients, believing in the importance of animal welfare, traceability, and minimal chemical use. From the beginning, organic certification was a key part of their mission. Happy Butter Ghee continues to uphold these values by sourcing butter exclusively from organic dairies.
What started as a small-scale project in their Devon home has grown into a thriving business. Rupert still batch cooks the ghee using traditional methods, now producing it in a dedicated kitchen workshop in Buckfastleigh.
Location and Availability
Happy Butter Ghee is crafted in the heart of Devon and is available for purchase online and through select retailers. Each jar reflects the family’s commitment to quality, tradition, and sustainability.
